Fecking VirginMedia!

  • October 30, 2013 8:13 pm

Get the sense that I’m just ever so slightly annoyed? Last Friday morning, our ISP — in their infinite wisdom — decided to carry out a little unplanned “maintenance” which involved disconnecting everything without warning. TV, phone, broadband — the lot. OK — so we were cool with that once we’d tried contacting them and got the “We’re doing some maintenance” message (or the “We are trying to fix a fault in your area” message — it seems to have been pot luck as to which “reason” you were given). We were even really chilled out when we still didn’t…

What Is it With Schools?

  • November 14, 2011 11:09 pm

I’m not convinced that K’s school understand how terribly debilitating his pain is. And — given that this is a school that is supposed to specialise in supporting children with physical disabilities — they aren’t being as supportive as I hoped they might be.

SportsLinx – Never Again!

  • June 1, 2010 3:22 pm

K had appendicitis in mid October. All went well and he was back at school by mid November with the proviso that he avoid any sports activity that could place strain on his stomach for the next month or so.

The school were (and always have been) great. But after he’d been back about a week, they announced that his class were going on a school trip to the local SportsLinx centre.

A Slice Of What?

I mentioned in a previous post that our experiences when eating at the ‘Slice’ restaurant at the Premier Travel Inn, Euston, were less than positive and promised to provide details.

Well, here they are…

Text Announcements

  • October 5, 2006 4:40 pm

I was particularly interested in the BBC’s recent article on LAMA (Location Aware Messaging for Accessibility). As someone whose hearing regularly goes from semi-reasonable to profoundly deaf, anything that allows me to see/hear public announcements in train stations would be a godsend. Any sound in an echoing environment is a problem and hearing aids, which tend to make sounds ‘tinny’ at the best of times, just make it worse. I have, literally, missed trains before now because the relevant PA announcement has been turned into a meaningless gabble by my hearing aid.

Enough is enough!

Current Mood: Thoroughly p*ssed off! 👿

I’m a member of a technical web design guild. Not long after I joined, I asked if there was anything I could do to help and ended up helping to assess applications for new members. In theory, it’s not too onerous a job as the guild has quite specific entry criteria for developers and my job was to apply them to the best of my ability.

I can’t have been doing too bad a job as I was left to do for over 2 years – during which time, two other people burnt out, one after the other. I stuck with it because I figured I should do something (rather than just sit on my backside which most other members seemed to do) to try to help other developers. And there have been times when it’s been really worthwhile. Of course, there were times when it wasn’t so hot. Getting a load of abuse from the odd person who didn’t make the required grade isn’t exactly fun but, overall, the good outweighed the bad.

Until last week…

Not With A Very Long Bargepole!

Current Mood: Evil 👿

A decidedly ‘ex’ client of mine decided to get in touch with me, out of the blue, this morning.

I have no idea which planet this person is currently occupying but it’s not this one!

Hassled, Harried And Bewildered

Current mood: Angry 😡

I am not having a good week and it’s only halfway through.

Having taken over a site two years ago and pretty much turned it from an embarrassment into something pretty neat, I know find myself being continually questioned about what the new site can, or can’t do.

Holidays

  • August 26, 2006 9:35 pm

Why is it that holidays always result in a backlog of work?

Sure – I’ve been away for a whole 10 days but I did give everyone at least a week’s notice (if not more) and suggested that they get any work done before I went away.

But – no. I have to come back to 400 emails – many of which were work related. It’s taken me about three days just to get the oustanding mails down to a reasonable level let alone get anything done.

On Tuesday I start the real work.
