3.5 Years and Counting…

  • October 31, 2013 9:12 am

It’s almost 4 years since K was diagnosed a chronic pain problem. And it’s come back — yet again — with a vengeance. Had we known, in 2009, that this would still be happening in 2013, I’m not sure what we would have done.

For the past 4 weeks, he’s been maxed out on pain meds and still unable to even move around the house most days without support. Three times, we’ve all worked hard (K included) to try & get him back into school — to no avail. Each time, he can only manage about 2 hours before the pain stops him from being able to concentrate or even take in what a teacher is saying. He is so exhausted trying to cope with the daily pain that he’s sleeping 12 — 13 hours a night and yet still doesn’t have the energy to walk very far.

Currently, the pain levels he has to deal with would floor the average, unprepared, adult.

And now it’s tropical fish

  • September 11, 2013 4:21 pm

Well the new goldfish only lasted a few weeks. So we then had a £50 empty tank. After a few weeks research, we decided to try tropical fish instead. The tank was thoroughly cleaned (cleaning gravel is not fun), a new tank thermostat/heater was bought (yet more expense) and the empty tank allowed to cycle for a week. Next on the agenda was a visit to the local fish shop (henceforth known as the LFS) where we came away with 4 balloon mollies, one betta ( aka Siamese Fighting fish) and a tiny albino cory. As I anticipated, muggins here…

We have a new pet!

Last Saturday morning, K went to a summer fair at the local youth club. A couple of hours later, he returned — looking slightly guilty — with one hand behind his back and a story about winning a prize at one of the fair booths. Eventually, the hand came out from behind his back to reveal a goldfish!

How the hell…

… do you manage to catch flu twice in 6 weeks?

Frankly, the timing couldn’t have been worse. R left for a 10-day (work related) visit to the US last Monday afternoon. 36 hours later, I developed a tickly cough. By the end of the day, it was pretty obvious that I had The Flu II.

School Play

  • February 5, 2013 10:13 pm

K has a part in his first major school play. The play is Beauty & the Beast and will, I assume, be a musical.

He had an audition about two weeks ago (when he was apparently told that he had a beautiful voice) and found out that he’d been given a part a few days later. Rehearsals are now about to start in earnest with the play scheduled for performances in July.

Do you know someone like this?

I do! 🙂

The Dreaded Lurgy

  • February 4, 2013 2:00 am

It’s been a pretty rough 8 or 9 days here. First K developed a tickly cough followed — 48 hours later — by a temperature and nausea. By this time, I had a thundering headache which simply refused to go away. That’s when it dawned on me that we both might have flu!

I Have Another Teenager

Yesterday was K’s 13th birthday, so I now have another one of these…

PE Lessons are now Banned

  • October 18, 2012 2:45 pm

K has been doing really well since returning to school at the start of September. So much so that many people thought his pain had vanished. Oh — if only! What had happened was a combination of the pain (both back & stomach) dropping to a tolerable level and K finally “owning” or accepting it as part of his life for now. He also started physiotherapy at the local hospital at the end of August (to help him lengthen his badly shortened ham strings) — attending every few weeks with a routine of exercise to perform three times a day.…

And It’s Back

  • July 9, 2012 9:15 am

The “pain holiday” is over 🙁 After about 9 or 10 weeks with very little bad stomach pain, it started to creep back in. First, it was just for an hour or so in the evening. Then it started to take over the whole evening. Finally, K was back to waking up with bad pain some mornings and missing school on the really bad days.
